Panda Dore, Chinatown Montreal

Family owned Shanghainese restaurant in Montreal Chinatown

Montreal’s Chinatown is filled with various restaurants, food markets, convenience stores, and a huge selection of bubble tea shops. One of my favorite restaurants to visit is Panda Dore, located at 14 Rue de la Gauchetière E. They are easy to locate and are a must-try.

The restaurant is super cozy and can comfortably seat up to 25 people during peak times. For those not able to get a seat, takeout is indeed an option. Check out some of their most popular dishes below from my current and past visits.

Steamed red bean buns or dòushā bāo (豆沙包) are a classic Chinese treat typically eaten for breakfast or a snack, and one of the most popular steamed buns.

Before hitting Panda Dore’s official menu, I was able to try out their red bean steamed cakes, which will be the newest item on their menu. I have a huge sweet tooth, so I had to try them.

These red bean buns were too cute to eat, but I did. They are a true symbol of the hard work and dedication that are put into every dish served at Panda Dore. These buns are carefully crafted, decorated, and steamed to perfection. The filling was not too sweet and was very enjoyable.

Pan Fried Buns (4), $7.99

Each time I visit Panda Dore, I order their handmade pan-fried pork buns. I had the pleasure of speaking to the owner and was informed that they hand-selected the pork shoulder for each batch of buns. The meat is then ground twice to ensure a beautifully smooth texture and carefully cooked. Once that step is completed, their secret family spices are added along with the finishing touches.

Crispy pork moon cake (4) $14.99

Traditionally made with pork, these crispy moon cakes are one of my favorite items on the menu. Each time I visit, I order one, as they are very filling. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. So far, I have not had a mooncake this good from any restaurant in Montreal’s Chinatown. When you visit, be sure to order one.

Gluten Salad (1) $9.99

Panda Dore offers this amazing gluten salad, and after trying it, I was shocked at how amazing it was. The ingredients for this salad are gluten cubes, mushrooms, daylilies, peanuts, and bamboo shoots. Panda Dore serves it up fresh daily.

Sixi kaofu is a Shanghainese sweet and savory dish made with braised gluten cubes, mushrooms, daylilies, peanuts, and bamboo shoots.

Final Review

I honestly love Panda Dore and give them a solid 9.5/10. I am always greeted with warm smiles and a friendly atmosphere. This is a family-owned business, and that feeling of home can be found here among the staff and diners. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Montreal for the first time or living in the city.

If you’re ever unsure of what to order, the staff is always ready to assist with any questions. Lastly, the food is always fresh and served promptly. Visit Panda Dore’s official Instagram page for more details.
