Buboy, Filipino Restaurant Montreal

Buboy, Filipino Restaurant Montreal

If you're looking for amazing Filipino food in Montreal, Buboy is the place to be. Since its grand opening, Buboy has made a mark in the city and is well known for serving up some of the tastiest Filipino comfort food. I recently tried Buboy for the first time today, and I can honestly say that I was blown away not just by the food but also by the decor, customer service, and overall experience.

Buboy is located at 5976 Monkland Ave., Montreal, in the neighborhood of NDG, and is less than a 15-minute walk from Metro Villa Maria. Buboy has set the bar high and showcases what traditional Filipino food tastes like; check out my visit below. Leave a comment and, as always, tell me what your favorite dish is from Buboy.

From classic favorites like sinigang and kare-kare to our signature OG Bulalo stew, we’re dedicated to bringing the vibrant flavors of Filipino cuisine to the 514.

Menu and ordering

When arriving, the menu is on display at Buboy. The pricing and ingredients are all available, which makes it easy to place an order. I was unsure of what to order as there were many choices, but with the owner's help, I settled on the canteloupe juice and the oxtail kare-kare.

Let's start with the cantaloupe juice. This was an easy decision, as I enjoy ordering authentic juices and drinks from the restaurants that I visit so that I can enjoy the full experience.

The canteloupe juice was very refreshing and cool; it arrived iced with edible strands of canteloupe. I enjoyed that it was naturally sweetened and not artificial. This juice, in my opinion, is perfect for summer. I highly recommend it and will order it again.

Oxtail Kare-Kare
Slow braised oxtail, rich peanut butter stew, and banana blossom over steamed rice.

The next item that I ordered was the Oxtail Kare-Kare. I am from the West Indies, and I am a huge fan of Caribbean-style oxtails, so this dish felt like home to me. When my food arrived, it smelled amazing! The dish was plated beautifully; it came with a generous side of white rice and a healthy portion of oxtail and fried eggplant.

The first bite of the oxtail kare-kare was simply delicious. The combination of the oxtail with the peanut butter stew was genius. It was quite evident that the oxtail was simmering for hours as the meat was falling off the bones. The oxtail was smooth like butter, and each bite tasted even more amazing than the last.

I highly recommend this dish to oxtail lovers. Even though the taste is different from traditional Caribbean oxtail, the love and care behind this dish are there. For first-timers to Buboy, check this dish out!

Buboy also sells an assortment of delicious desserts.

Not only is the food delicious at Buboy, but the desserts are as well. After my meal, I tried their freshly baked goods, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Let's start with the ube crinkles. I am a huge fan of taro, so they were the first on my list to try. They were not too sweet, solid on the outside, and soft on the inside. I will order these again, and they are a must-try when you visit Bubiy.

I then dove into the double chocolate cookies, which were delicious. The cookie is very thick and chocolatey, and it can serve two people. I recommend having this double chocolate cookie with a nice cup of hot tea or coffee.

Last on the list is the bibingka; sadly, this was the least favorite item that I ordered, but if you are a lover of salty treats and coconut, then this is for you!

What I ordered

1. Ube Crinkles: Ube crinkles, also known as purple yam crinkles, are Filipino cookies made from purple yam, flour, eggs, baking powder, butter, and sugar.

2. Double chocolate cookies: rich, deep double chocolate cookies made with Filipino tablea

3. Bibingka-Bibingka is a Filipino cake made with rice flour and coconut milk.

Pork Siopao

Looking to make your Buboy experience last a little longer? Pork siopao can be purchased to be enjoyed at home. This delicious snack is very popular and is typically made with a combination of pork, chicken, beef, shrimp, or salted duck egg.

Final Review

Buboy is in my top five restaurants for 2024. This was my first time having Filipino food, and I cannot imagine having it anywhere else. Buboy did not disappoint and has demonstrated what authentic cooking should taste like. From start to finish, my visit was very pleasant; any questions that I had regarding the menu were all answered.

I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch; the cantaloupe juice was one of a kind, and the oxtail kare-kare left me wanting more. I am still stuck on how soft and well-cooked this dish was. It takes certain skills to cook oxtail, and Buyboy nailed it. The items that I ordered were reasonably priced for Monkland Ave. and did not break the bank.

I liked the decor; it was not overwhelming, and the space was used very well.  Buboy is not a large restaurant; space is limited, so arrive early to claim your spot. Like me, if you're unsure of what to order, the owner is super friendly and will help you with any questions or concerns that you may have.
